The Italian Geodetic Observatory in Antarctica (IGOA) is a project funded by the Italian National Antarctic Research Program (PNRA - Programma Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartide) and managed by a team of researchers from various Italian universities and research centers. Every year, IGOA staff participate in PNRA expeditions at the Mario Zucchelli Station (MZS) during the Austral summer (typically from late October to mid-February).

The Observatory’s activities are focused on establishing and maintaining a geodetic infrastructure in Northern Victoria Land to define a three-dimensional (planimetric-altimetric) reference frame and an absolute altimetric reference model (local and global), as well as to characterize the region’s neotectonic processes.

The IGOA team processes data collected from the Observatory's GNSS stations (permanent, semi-permanent, and episodic) and tide gauge for scientific purposes and shares them with international research groups and centers (via the dedicated page of this website), thereby contributing to the collective efforts of the global geodetic community to understand Antarctic geodynamics.
